America West Airlines is a major U.S. carrier based in Phoenix, from which it serves more non-stop destinations with greater frequency than any other carrier. America West has hubs at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. The airline's modern, fuel-efficient fleet consists of Airbus A320s, Airbus A319s, Boeing 757s and Boeing 737s. By the end of 2006, America West expects to take delivery of the new 110-seat A318. The average age of the America West fleet is approximately 10 years.
America West is the only airline to not only survive, but also thrive, since the U.S. airline industry was deregulated. The carrier initiated service on August 1, 1983, with three aircraft and 280 employees. America West grew rapidly, and by 1990 it achieved major-airline status, with annual revenues of more than $1 billion.
Today, America West is a low-fare, full-service airline. Its coast-to-coast route system includes 89 destinations across the U.S., Mexico and Canada with more than 800 daily departures. America West utilizes its Phoenix and Las Vegas hubs as gateways for travel throughout its route network. Information obtained from America West Airlines.
