The airport is only 20 to 40 min’s from the holiday destination of Lake Maggoire and the numerous campsites offer cheap accommodation. The airport is a major holiday airport with most Italian charter airlines operating there also some interesting foreign charter airlines. Tunisian, Romanian Spanish and the like. I was told that Saturday, Sunday and Monday were the best days. But I think the airport has appeal for visiting enthusiasts any day. For enthusiasts on a spotting holiday, Bergamo, Turin and Milan Linate are within easy and quick reach. In my opinion a car is a must for this airport

Now that the military presence has left Milan Malpensa, spotting is relatively trouble free. The Picnic area at Ferno is still the best spot for photographing arrivals. But arrivals on 35L can be distorted by the heat haze after just a few hours of summer sun and even aircraft on 35R can be affected.
After 14:00 this spot becomes “into sun” and is of little use to photographers. South of the airport is a public recreational park, access is gained by a dirt road. From the car park area afternoon arrivals can be photographed landing on 35R. The local spotters told me that aircraft landing on 35L cannot be photographed from here due to the forest. However on the 2 days I was there very few A/C landed on 35L mainly Aliatalia and the American airlines and some Cargo a/c.
Departures from 35L can be photographed from the car park north of the terminal 2 however I didn’t actually do any photography there and I don’t know what the local police would think of it.
